Tanzania – From Kilimanjaro to Ngorongoro Crater

Start in a small town east of Mount Kilimanjaro. On village streets, unsurfaced tracks and trails we pass through the villages of the Chagga, always at the feet of the mountain. Be sure to find the image from your picture postcard with a view of the Kilimanjaro. We travel to the north, to the border between Tanzania and Kenya. There you get a ravishing view of the Amboseli National Park. In the forest north of Kilimanjaro we have an opportunity to observe the blue monkeys (diadem monkeys), black-and-white colobus monkeys, buffaloes and elephants.
We ride through the savannah into the plain of the Masai country. While doing so we travel across the North of the Arusha National Park with a view of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. As the animals do not know the boundaries of the park, we shall probably watch giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and dik-diks. During a rest day in Longido we may possibly go up the mountain with a Masai being our local guide. Up there you find dense green forest and a small waterfall.
Next our tour goes across a small forest to the savannah, through Masai villages to the foot of Mount Kitumbaine (2,865 m). Time and again we see the Masai people with their cattle. Later on we have a beautiful view of the Gilai Gilai mountain. While doing so we travel in a dry region, possibly with much dust and wind. Soon we have a beautiful look at the Ol Doinyo Lengai, the holy mountain of the Masai and the last volcano in this area that is active still. Not later than now you will have seen a few ostrich, giraffes, gazelles and zebras.

We visit Engaruka, one of Tanzania’s most important historical places where about 500 years ago a community of farmers developed a sophisticated system of irrigation and farming. For unknown reasons the agriculturists left the place at around 1700 AD. The ruins give a strong impression of their highly skilful mode of agricultural production. During the next days we ride down into the Ngorongoro crater-a spectacular view followed by the encounter with an abundance of wild animals. Over 20,000 large animals are living her. Zebra, gnu, black crowned crane, hippopotamus, hyena, buffalo, jackal, lion, elephant, gazelle, antelope… all is here to see. An absolutely opulent and competently staged animal show. The following day an equally exciting ride into the Lake Manyara National Park with an extremely rich animal world. Another overnight stay in Moshi and return flight the next evening.

Description

A fabulous journey – with marvelous landscapes and views in North Tanzania. We cycle around the Kilimanjaro across the Masai steppe to the Ngorongoro highland. An adventurous and ambitious tour. Most roads are unsurfaced and there are some sloping stretches among them. In total 460 km in 10 cycling days. vThe group is always accompanied by an escort vehicle that also offers food and drink. The vehicle has a repair outfit and first-aid kit and is able to give a ride to tired cyclists too. For the noontime break we arrange for a picnic at an interesting or particularly beautiful place. Three meals a day, plus water to go.
Guided cycling tour for a small group, with daily legs from 30 to 70 km. You take your own bike along (mountain bike or other bike suitable for cross-country driving). If required you may also rent a bicycle on the spot (for about 10 USD a day). Overnight stays in tents, near to villages, on the side of schools, churches, farms or a police station.
Tanzania is a very beautiful country with wonderfully kind-hearted people that receives more and more appreciation in Europe. While going on cycling tour we attach importance to cultural aspects, to encounters with the local people of the region and the attempt to gain some understanding of their customs and way of life. This will be a matchless journey! You shall receive further detailed information regarding your travel preparations together with your booking confirmation.
